Who’s up for a bit of world domination? Huh?
Here we have a modern day interpretation of the historic and famous board game “Risk”, developed for Android by the folks at ALLSoftware.
If, like me, you aren’t too familiar with the original tactical warfare game, “Risk”, here’s a little bit on what the game involves:
In the classic “Risk” game of military strategy, you are battling to conquer the world. To win, you must launch daring attacks, defend yourself on all fronts, and sweep across vast continents with boldness and cunning. But remember, the dangers, as well as the rewards, are high. Just when the world is within your grasp, your opponent might strike and take it all away!
On your turn, try to capture territories by defeating your opponents’ armies. But be careful: Winning battles will depend on careful planning, quick decisions and bold moves. You’ll have to place your forces wisely, attack at just the right time and fortify your defenses against all enemies.
Starting with your share of the globe, and a set amount of soldiers, your aim is to take risks with your resources and acquire territories not belonging to you. This comes at a rather coincidental (or perhaps intended) time, as we mark the 100 year anniversary of WW1!
Rise Wars, from what I understand, is a close adaptation of the original board game, and will please fans of the original no end. You are presented with a local version of the game (versus the CPU) or online, where you can battle against your friends in a good old virtual manner.
The developer, who you can tell sits firmly in the “Risk” fan club, has gone to good lengths to digitize the original and add additional features to further fuel the addiction. Achievements, online play, score sharing, military statistics and so forth.
On a UX level, the app is more than user friendly and lays out the options clearly and concisely. After a second whirl I started getting to grips with the app, the in-game pointers serve as a useful guide to playing the game – handy for first timers.
You can play the game on a global or continental level, so if you’re only interested in dominating your neighbouring countries, you’re in luck!
If you’re still having trouble understanding the rules of the game, work on the basis that neighbouring territories are more easily overtaken if your soldier count is higher than theirs (kind of like in real life!). You need to strengthen your countries and attack, role the dice and land a higher number to win the battle.
It has to said, not all board games convert to Android all that well, but after a few plays, I’m already a fan of Rise Wars. I like the twee marching band in the background, it’s a fun addition.
For hardcore “Risk” fans, you may wish to watch the video below before committing to the download. For the converted, “Rise Wars” is available for free download – there is also a paid version, which comes with ads disabled.
